Strong as a Man

When Joon Ho was born, Apa seemed to prefer him because he was a boy and yet in this vignette, he seems to be treating him very harshly and abusively. a) If you asked Apa why he was so harsh with him this day, what would he say? b) How would you explain why he treats him so harshly?

  1. A.If i were to ask Apa why he is treating his first son Joon Ho so harshly, i think he will probably say that every man has to learn the hard way and men are the leaders in the family who make the rules and are allowed to do whatever they want in order to keep the family in line because their are the ones who are the providers, who are strong and better at doing things, for example when Apa(father)was teaching his son " you cry like a girl...Have i not taught you anything" referring to women as weak, also when Joon Ho hits his older sister Young Ju on the head as Apa(Father) seems to in previous chapters.
B.From what i have read i think he treats his son this way because he wants to teach him men are strong, powerful and can do whatever they want and can control women because he sees them as the less and weaker kind.

  2. Well said Indira. Do you think he would say he is living up to his responsibilities for his children? Do you think he loves them?

  3. A.I wouldnt say he is i think he has the wrong idea of what a strong man could be, its not all about control and power over someone.
B.I do think that he loves his children but he doesnt show it in a way many others might , hes to caught up in the " strong man" image which he thinks is someone who doesnt show emotion.
